INLAY TECHNIQUES WERE INVENTED DURING THE BRONZE AGE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. INLAYING REQUIRES METALS OF CONTRASTING HARDNESS TO HOLD WELL. THE PRINCIPLE BEHIND METAL INLAYS IS THAT WIRE OR SHEET ARE FORCED INTO CAVITIES IN THE UNDERLYING METAL, WHICH REQUIRES CAREFUL AND SENSITIVE HAMMERING.  THESE CAVITIES ARE CUT SO THEIR WALLS IN THE UNDERLYING METAL SLOPE INWARD, OR UNDERCUT.  THIS ENSURES THAT THE TWO PIECES OF METAL WILL ADHERE PERMANENTLY.

ENAMEL COLLECTION

ENAMELING IS ONE OF THE OLDEST FORMS OF SURFACE DECORATION, USED TO ADD COLOR TO JEWELRY WITHOUT HAVING TO RELY ON GEMSTONES. ESSENTIALLY COLORED GLASS, POWDERED AND APPLIED MOST OFTEN TO METAL BASE, IT IS FIRED AT SUFFICIENT TEMPERATURES TO MELT AND FORM DECORATIVE SURFACES.

INTAGLIO COLLECTION

THE WORD INTAGLIO COMES FROM THE ITALIAN "INTAGLIARE" MEANING TO CARVE OR ENGRAVE. INTAGLIO DESIGNS ARE MADE ON GEMSTONES, GLASS, CERAMICS, STONE OR SIMILAR MATERIAL. AN INTAGLIO IS MADE BY GRINDING AWAY MATERIAL BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GEM, LEAVING AN INVERSE IMAGE. THE INTAGLIO IS USED PRIMARILY FOR SEALS AND IT'S THE MOST ANCIENT FORM OF GEM ENGRAVING.
